For around $30 I was able to give my son a way to better relax... even just play. Sometimes when he has a meltdown he jumps under this stretchy sheet and lets out his tears. It seems to help. He can also punch and stretch the sheet without causing any damage to himself or to the sheet.
Max sleeps in my bed about 75% of the time as he gets weepy at night and wants to have someone to share his anxieties with. Me, being the worn out mom of a long day, usually just allows him fall asleep in my arms or at my side... but, I'm trying to ween him off that type of comfort by having those discussions in his own room, and then leaving him with his favorite stuffed dog and his stretchy, supportive, pressure-providing sheet. I'm also brainstorming ideas for a weighted blanket... something I'm certain he'd benefit from.
The vest hasn't worked too well, because when he's overwhelmed or out of control, he has to calm down long enough for me to catch him and strap him in... which for Max, usually just makes him more upset. Not to mention from my perspective it feels somewhat like chasing down a mental patient and strapping him into a straight jacket. I can't handle that feeling. If I knew when to put him in the vest before he broke out in a fit, I would... but that magical moment isn't always easy to identify and the few times I've asked him... "hey, should I get your vest?", he's told me no. So to get the vest might in and of itself become a trigger for his rage.
Before I continue... these vests are the answer for some kids... just not mine! Many children on the spectrum do wonderfully with compression vests, but you just can't know how your own child will respond until you try. My son hasn't taken to it.
autistic deep pressure lycra sheet.
My next purchase from this retailer will likely be the silly sock... my only hesitation at this point is lack of funds and the potential for sibling fights... I don't see Max wanting to share this with his sister, but totally think she'd want to crawl in with him! lol Looks like too much fun... for anyone really. The silly sock is made from the same type of fabric as the bed sheet, but is something they can stretch in and roll around in throughout the house. Pretty cool.
Btw, in case you're wondering... we do give Max blankets to use with is sheet! We stripped the bed for these photos so you could see the sheet in action. :) My boy doesn't go to bed chilly!
